Freight broker software: how to choose

"Freight broker software" covers several categories that are often confused for each other. A TMS is not a load board, and a load board is not a marketplace. Knowing which layer is missing is the fastest way to fix a slow booking process.

Transportation management system (TMS) — system of record for orders, dispatch, billing, and settlement
Load boards — public listings used to advertise freight and find unfamiliar capacity
Private freight marketplace — runs the carrier-facing booking workflow: publish privately, collect bids, counteroffers, and Book Now, compare, award, track
Visibility and tracking — location and status updates during transit
Rating and market data — rate benchmarks and capacity trends

Evaluation checklist

Does it integrate with your TMS, or create double entry?
Can you keep rates and load details private to approved carriers?
Are bids, counteroffers, and instant booking supported on one load?
Do drivers get a usable way to post status updates?
Is pricing per seat, per load, or per workspace?
